A crane is probably one of the most useful pieces of heavy engineering equipment used in construction. Essentially it is a lifting device that can be used to move items up down and horizontally. Cranes are mechanical lifting devices which use a winder, ropes and sheaves to lift or lower materials, as well as shifting them horizontally. Functionality and Use
Cranes have a high level of functionality and are incredibly important for use in many construction projects.
Importantly in order for the crane to be completely stable, the net of all moments around the hinge point or fulcram must equal 0.
In practice the rated load (US) is a value less than that which would cause the crane to tip - normally 75% to tipping weight. For cranes supported by outriggers this is increased to 85%.
